Brihadeeshwara Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva at Tanjavur, Tamil Nadu, about 346 km away from Chennai and 237 km away from Rameshwaram. It is considered as one of the biggest temples in South India. It is the perfect example of Dravidian style architecture. It is also known as “Big Temple” among the locals. This beautiful temple was built by Rajraja Chola in 9th or 10th century AD. This temple is famous as “UNESCO World Heritage Site”.
It is said that the “Shikhara” or “Kalas” of this temple weighs around 80 tons. In its history, the temple has faced damage and some of its artwork is now missing. But today, this temple is well maintained by the Government of Tami Nadu. The complex of this temple is divided into the main 5 sections. The Sanctum with the Tower, the Nandi Hall, the Main Comunity Hall (MukhaMandapam), the Great Gathering Hall (MahaMamdapam) and the Main Scantum or Garbha Griha.
Around the main temple, there are many other small shrines dedicated to Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesh, Lord Kartik. These shrines are decorated with many beautiful and magneficient carvings and sculptures. The Nandi place in the Mukhamandap is carved from a single monolithc rock which is said to be largest in the country. It weighs approximately 25 tons. The temple turned 1000 years old in September 2010. This temple is the most visited tourist attraction in Tamil Nadu.
